Organised and led by Christine Baker, 33 members and guests of the Inner Wheel Club of Oadby had a great day out at Waddesdon Manor, Buckinghamshire.
The Renaissance-style chateau was build by Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild, a member of one of the world's wealthiest banking families and is described as "The jewel in the crown of the National Trust."
It was appropriate, therefore, that among the Inner Wheel's guests was president of the Rotary Club of Oadby, David Knight, who was, until almost a year ago, an international banker.
The day started promptly at 0930 when a Woods Coach whisked the party away from outside St Peter's Church Hall to near Aylesbury.
For most, the second stop after alighting from the coach was the ornate aviary and its beautifully-coloured residents native of the Indian Ocean lands. Then a journey along the Reindeer Walk led to a voyage of discovery in Narnia, temporarily established in the restored stables. After lunch, the party gathered at 2pm for a tour of the seasonally-dressed East and Bachelor wings of the manor, with floor-to-ceiling trees.
Some cuemen, though, considered putting a model railway on the billiard table was not far short of sacrilege.
Afterwards it was back into the dry, but cold, afternoon air for a walk in the grounds and, for some, a trip back to the chateau on the land train. One Inner Wheel member, however, had to ride up front in the warmth of the Land Rover, practising her regal wave to the plebs travelling on foot or in the open-air land train behind!
The day was a typical example of the fun and laughter that's always present when the Inner Wheel and Rotary clubs of Oadby get together.
Near the end of the two-hour drive home, Chris was given a resounding and well-deserved round of applause for organising the event, which went off without a hitch.
