Young Chef Competition 2012

On Saturday 1st December, 8 young people took part in the Young Chef Competition. This is the first round of a competition which goes on to District, Regional and National rounds.


Read below to find out what the competiton is all about.


The objectives of the competiton are :

  • To promote healthy eating and cooking skills in young people.
  • To capture young people's enthusiasm and enjoyment of cooking.
  • To give young people a sense of achievement.
  • To develop an essential life skill.

The competitors are judged on :

  • Choice and originality of menu.
  • Planning.
  • Range of skills used.
  • Hygiene and tidiness of working.
  • Meal served at the correct temperature.
  • Presentation of table.
  • Taste of finished dishes.
  • Costings.

The judges are all professionals in the catering industry and judge according to an agreed list of criteria. As well as looking at the end product, they are also looking for good planning and a workman like approach in the kitchen.

Regardless of their placing, each competitor is given a certificate which is included in their school record of achievement.

PS : Stroud Rotary Club is aware that some local people go through difficult times and find it almost impossible to afford even basic food. For this reason, we are also supporting The Stroud Food Bank, by making collections of food items at each of our meetings .

    more On Friday 22nd and Saturday 23rd November, Stroud Rotary assisted by Stroud Inner Wheel were out collecting for the Philippines Disaster. The result was £1,230, enough to buy 2 Shelter Boxes.

    Visit to The Museum in the Park

    more On 2nd May, the club visited 'The Museum in the Park', in Stratford Park, Stroud. Although it's very close to where we regularly meet, many members had never been to the museum. The visit was followed by lunch at 'The Lavender Bakehouse' in Chalford.

    Cheque Presentation Evening

    more On Monday 23rd February, Stroud Rotary Club presented the money from the Christmas Collection to representatives of 3 charities. * MENINGITIS NOW received £400 * SUE RYDER received £400 * COBALT HEALTH received £300.

    Graham Furley receives 'Service above Self' Award

    more At the Rotary District 1100 Mini-Convention on 2nd March, Graham Furley of the Stroud Club received the 'Service above Self' Award. Only 150 of these awards are made, worldwide, each year.

    Young Chef Semi Final

    more On Saturday 25th January, the semi-finals of the Young Chef competition was held at Marling School in Stroud.

    more Every year in the weeks before Christmas, Father Christmas and the Rotary Elves collect for local children's charities. You can find them outside the local supermarkets, or around Minchinhampton, Bussage and Chalford on the Carol Float.

    Ebley Fireworks 2012

    more 22/10/12 : Ebley Fireworks display is organised jointly by Stroud, Nailsworth and Stonehouse Rotary Clubs and Stonehouse and Stroud Roundtable. It has been run now for over 50 years. Local charities benefit from the proceeds.

    Know Your Blood Pressure Day : 20th April 2013

    more Stroud Rotary Club held their 'Know Your Blood Pressure Day' at the Baptist Hall, next to Stroud Farmers' Market. During the day, 5 medics administered 118 blood pressure tests and 47 people were referred to their GP for further advice and treatment.

    more On Saturday 16th November, the first round of the Young Chef competition was held at Marling School.

    Ebley Fireworks 2013

    more On a wet, windy and rather cold day in October, members of Stroud, Stonehouse and Nailsworth Rotary, along with teams of supporters, turned out to run the annual Ebley Fireworks. Despite the weather, it turned out to be an excellent event.

    Visit to the BBC Studios in Bristol

    more On the 13th March,a group went to visit the BBC studios in Bristol. Most people listen to BBC Radio or watch BBC television almost every day, but know little about how the programs are made. On this visit, we found out some of the secrets.

    Marie Curie Collection 2015

    more On Friday 27th February, members of Stroud Rotary were at Tesco in Stroud for the annual Marie Curie Great Daffodil Appeal. In total £468 was collected, which will fund almost 24 hours of care for the terminally ill

    Graham Furley's birthday flight.

    more 19/09/2012: To celebrate Graham Furley's 90th birthday, friends at Stroud Rotary Club bought him a special flight in a DH Tiger Moth from Staverton Airport. Graham trained on Tiger Moth's to become an RAF pilot in WWII.

    Visit to Stroud Brewery

    more 04/10/2012: As part of Rotary's interest in local business,visits to various local organisations are organised. Stroud Brewery is a 'craft' brewery started in 2006 by Greg Pilley.

    Your Green Future 2014

    more Your Green Future was held at Stratford Park in Stroud on 3rd and 4th of February. Rotary was one of the sponsors of the event, and many Rotarians helped run the event.

    The winning quiz team, Les Quizerables, from WSP Soliciters receive their prize from President Richard Small.
