Local schoolchildren bring joy to children in Eastern Europe
During a big pre-Christmas campaign, the Rotary Club of Oadby raised funds to buy shoeboxes and persuaded local schoolchildren and others to fill them with items to help disadvantaged children and families in Easter Europe.
A total of 328 shoeboxes were despatched to arrive in Eastern European countries in time to bring seasonal joy.
Taking into account the cost of purchasing the boxes and allowing about £15 for the contents of each box, it is reckoned that the cost of the scheme this winter has run to about £5,290.
In addition, a business contact of Rotarian Jeff Rosenthal again donated £500 to the Rotary Club of Oadby’s International Service Committee which will decide soon how it will use the money.
The local schools which helped include Brocks Hill Primary, Gartree High School, Brookside Primary, Thurnby St Luke’s Primary, Fernvale Primary, Moat Community College, St Thomas More Primary and Beauchamp College.
Other boxes were filled by members of the Rotary Club of Oadby and the Rotary Club of Oadby Launde.
Club president David Knight said: "This, once again, is proof of the wonderful support we get each year from our local communities of schools. Many needy children and families in the new Europe will have a much better Christmas as a result of their generosity."
