Olympian Avril delivers to Rotary Club

Avril Lennox MBE visited the Rotary Club of Oadby and thrilled members with her memories of sporting success and Olympic tragedy.
Olympic gymnast Avril Lennox MBE visited the Rotary Club of Oadby to see them display for the first time the banners in their meeting place, The Wigston Stage Hotel.
The two banners were among those on display in the town in the summer of 2012 when the Olympic torch-bearers ran through the town and during the Olympic and Paralympic games in London.
The Rotary club was just one of several organisations who wanted to own a piece of the 2012 memorabilia.
Avril made the hairs stand up on the back of listeners' necks when she described the thrill of hearing her name being repeated around the arena just after she had performed very well in her first major competition. She also moved her audience when she described seeing the helicopters lift off with the hostages seized during the 1974 Olympics in Munich.
Avril had the great misfortune in her sport to compete in two Olympics against Olga Korbut and Nadia Comăneci.
She won many titles and was her country's top gymnast from 1974-77. She was awarded the MBE for her services to her sport and has coached many young gymnasts to significant success. She is now Oadby and Wigston Borough Council's Leisure Development Officer. She plays golf and got a a handicap of nine but delcined an invitation to join the national squad... preferring instead to enjoy, for fun only, the Gift of Sport, which was the subject of her talk to the Rotary club.
