Art Event 2010

Local artist Eric Auld presented

"OIL CITY IN OILS"

It was the eighth in a series of annual art events organised in aid of charity by the Rotary Club of Aberdeen Deeside, on Sunday 9 May at the Marcliffe Hotel, North Deeside Road, Pitfodels, Aberdeen where proprietor Stuart Spence once again generously donated the use of the Grand Ballroom for the evening. The artist this year was well known Aberdeen artist Eric Auld. The painting process started at 7.00 pm and was captured live and projected for all to see using a high-quality CCTV system. Eric explained his techniques and methods as the painting evolved. He also took questions from the audience as he worked.

It soon became clear that the subject of the picture Eric painted was highly topical being a view of Union Terrace Gardens in Aberdeen. There was a proposal to "develop" the gardens into a Civic Square which many Aberdonians believed was a step too far.

Although the first picture looks as though Eric is inspecting with a magnifying glass it is in fact a diminishing glass. This allow the whole picture to be viewed as though from afar.

Before the event and during the interval pictures and prints of Eric were on display and for sale.

At the end of the evening the picture was auctioned with the proceeds going towards the Friends of Roxburgh House and other charities.

The final picture might have been historic if the Aberdeen City Council had proceeded with the Civic Square development.
Sadly Eric Auld passed away on Christmas Eve 2013.
