Barrie Jones speaking on "A light hearted look at driving".
Stewards:- Tim Bowker Lead* & Mike Houlston ( Speakers Report)

Barrie, who is an examiner for advanced motoring, gave an interesting and useful talk about his observations on people's driving. He emphasised the need for concentration and anticipation, which in his experience are often lacking. A lively question and answer session followed. The President thanked Barrie for his braveness in talking to members on a subject where everybody knows best!
Barrie handed out the following notes of his talk, for future reference:-

A LIGHT HEARTED VIEW OF DRIVING OBSERVATION

WHAT TO LOOK OUT FOR.

Anticipating other road users may do.

-        Children crossing roads.

-        Cyclists having to manoeuvre around pot holes.

-        Motor bikes on main road when you are exiting side road.

Motorway manoeuvres.

-        Vehicles changing lanes and maybe indicating late.

-        Vehicles joining from slip roads.

-        Positioning your vehicle before bends.

Road signs

-        Look at the signs - Do you remember the sign?

-        Actively remember the sign.

-        Bend in road - what the sign tells us?

We are all good drivers aren't we?

BUT ARE WE?

DO WE REALLY CONCENTRATE WHEN WE ARE DRIVING?

-are we listening to wife/children/relations/radio/mobile phone/texting?

ARE WE THINKING OF OTHER THINGS?

-work/shopping/gardening/painting/bills/ our last conversation with someone?

DID  I SEE THAT LAST TURNING?

-feeling tired whilst driving?

WHAT DID THE  LAST SIGN SAY?

-I saw the last sign but I did not remember what it indicated?

HOW FAR AHEAD AM I LOOKING?

-you should be looking about 500yds ahead I DIDN'T SEE THAT CAR PASSING ME

-look in your mirrors frequently (approximately every 20 seconds at 70mph)

I DIDN'T SEE HIM PULL OUT?

-double check before you make a move

WHAT MOTOR BIKE / CYCLIST?

-as above

DO YOU INDICATE BEFORE MAKING A MOVE?

-let other drivers know that you are GOING to make a move not when you have done it.
