World Challenge Trip to West Malaysia
On Thursday 11 September four senior pupils from Perth Grammar School gave a fascinating presentation to club members on their experiences about a World Challenge trip to West Malaysia. Nina Donald, Kira Scott, Catherine Smith and Jennifer Beekie were all part of a mixed group who set off to explore what is said to be the oldest tropical rainforest in the world and they recounted the thrills and spills of this most exciting adventure which had been assisted by the Rotary Club of Perth.
After arriving in the capital Kuala Lumpur and consuming some exotic dishes it was off to the Cameron Highlands, part of the mountain chain stretching down the peninsula, for early orientation and acclimatisation. There then followed jungle training in Tamang Negara where, sensibly, the group adopted a less demanding regime by opting for day excursions into the jungle instead of the planned overnight stays. Project work followed in the village of Bentong near Kuala Lumpur where they got to know some of the villagers from a minority tribe and became involved in some useful work, including ditch construction. The trip then ended with some well earned rest and relaxation in the seaside resort of Port Dickson near Malacca.
All in all it was a fascinating experience for them which they recounted admirably.
Willie Coupar delivered the vote of thanks congratulating the pupils and their teacher, Christy Stevenson, on their achievements.
