Uzbekistan - Nick Rowles

Nick using a series of slides illustrated his recent trip to Uzbekistan in Central Asia.  Uzbekistan is one of the republics which came into being following the fall of the Soviet Union.  It is one of only two doubly landlocked countries in the world (the other is Luxembourg).  Its developing tourist industry is based on the fact that it is at the heart of the Silk Road, the ancient trade route which has existed from the Middle Ages through to the nineteenth century, linking China with India and Europe.  The three main Silk Route cities, Kivu, Bakara and Samalkand are all found in the country.  Despite having an annual rainfall of less than 350mm, the extensive use of irrigation has made the country one of the world
