Steve Lowe

STEVE Lowe did not take the orthodox route into journalism. He was a county councillor and painter and decorator, whose skills were spotted by former owner of LSNMedia, Frank Branston.

Lowe became a part-time journalist and columnist for Bedfordshire on Sunday in 1996, full-time in 1998, news editor in 1999, editor in 2000 and group editor in 2003.

In 2000 Nelson Mandela came to Bedford to unveil a bust of Bedford-born anti-apartheid campaigner Bishop Trevor Huddleston. Lowe had led a group campaigning to buy the bust, sculpted by the late Ian Walters, for the town.

In 2001 he won the Press Gazette Scoop of the Year for his story on dead bodies being piled up in the Chapel of Rest of Bedford Hospital as the morgue was full. That year he also won the Newspaper Society's award of Journalist of the Year in a free newspaper.

In 2002 Lowe was involved in a high profile libel case against officers from the local council. He was in the courtroom next to the slightly lower profile Daily Mirror versus Naomi Campbell. Bedfordshire on Sunday mainly won in the High Court and mainly lost in the Court of Appeal. Lawyers won both times.
