Gerry Garner
Gerry is a very well known, popular and respected figure of the Bedford business community. His expertise has helped many of Bedford's leading businesses to reach great success. A member of Castle Rotary - that helps many individuals and organisations.

The two motions before members were:

The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) should not receive a licence fee, but should be self funding.

For the motion Mr Ian Codrington, Solicitor (retired). Notary Public.

Against the motion Mr David Wiltshire. Dental specialist (retired). Famous author.

The motion was defeated by 10 votes to six.

" The response to the motion that the "BBC Should be Self-funding" was difficult for me as I  think there is a strong case for that being so.
However, by pointing out the great range of the output of both the Radio and TV on the BBC, and avoiding the contentious political bias which is most definitely true, and appealing to sentiment, the members rather stupidly agreed with me!!!"
David Wiltshire.

The United Kingdom should change the electoral system from first past the post.

For the motion Mr Martin Stonecliffe.  Ex Police Force. White van driver.

Against the motion Mr Malcolm Reidford. Banker (retired).

The motion was defeated by 14 votes to three.

"I was supporting the motion to change the’ First past the Post ‘ voting system [FPTP] I didn’t offer an alternative but simply highlighted the unfairness of FPTP when it allows Scot Nats to have 56 seats for 1,400,000 votes and UKIP 1 seat for 3,800,000."
Martin Stonecliffe
