Gordon Mackie - 'Waste Management and Rotary'

On Tuesday 21st July, to an audience of Rotarians and one guest, Gordon Mackie spoke about his career, in particular about the manner in which he had been introduced to the Rotary family whilst working in Sri Lanka as a Waste Management Consultant on a World Bank funded project.

Gordon, a member of the Llandudno Rotary Club, commenced his career in private sector highway construction after graduating in Glasgow with a BSc in civil engineering.  Shortly after this he switched to local government where he spent 18 years before moving to the private sector again, primarily working within the waste management industry.  In 1996 he started his own waste management consultancy which he operated for 17 years before retiring.

In particular Gordon expanded on his experiences in Sri Lanka in 1997 where he was invited to a Gala Dinner (for Miss World) organised by Rotarians throughout the country, later joining the Rotary Club of Colombo Mid City and his participation in the distribution of polio vaccinations by the club in the civil war torn (Tamil Tigers) North Eastern region of the country.  On returning to the UK later that year he transferred to the Hyde Rotary Club in Manchester.
