26th Charter Dinner Celebration
The clubs 26th Anniversary Charter Dinner was an occasion to reflect on past achievements and look forward to the challenges of ensuring the club remains at the heart of our community. The evening commenced with guest speaker and founder member Hugh Johnson entertaining everyone with stories of the early years of the club. From small beginnings we saw how the club has evolved to a healthy membership of 32 and is involved in many projects in our local area and support many at national and international level.
During the evening Assistant District Governor Alistair Risk was called to the lectern to make a District Duty Announcement. That duty was to honour Alex Hermiston with a Paul Harris Fellowship for his 25 years of dedicated, quiet and effective service to the club and the community including his year as club President in 1997/8. Seldom has Alex shown so many colours in his face --was it the holiday sun or was it a rush of excitement and blood pressure--if it was he recovered quickly and was applauded as he collected his well deserved certificate and medal from President Fiona.
Also recognised was the guest of honour John Garvie the recently retired Rector of Dornoch Academy. John was recognised for his 20 plus years of dedicated service to the Dornoch and District community. Paddy Murray gave an amusing and detailed profile of Johns many achievements and contributions. The reply from John was not only brief but hugely entertaining to the audience of over 40 Rotarians and friends who had gathered for the occasion. They were honoured to hear him say how much the club had helped in delivering career assistance and other opportunities to Dornoch Academy pupils during his time as rector.
