My life. My jobs. My interests by Margaret Stockton.
One of my earliest community activities involved organising games for children with
disabilities and learning difficulties. It was a wonderful and fulfilling experience.
When we moved to Nantwich, I began working for the Inland Revenue, not an organisation
well-known for its help in the community!
A group of us therefore decided to pusue a range of activities to raise money for various local
Charities.
Unfortunately my involvement in these avtivities was curtailed when in 1998 I was diagnosed
with M.S.
After a period of time the Inland Revenue decided to dispense with my services and gave me
early retirement. I “moped” around for about 6 months and then realised that what was
important was not what I could not do, but rather, find out what I could do.
Having been in the Air Force in my younger days, I decided to join the British Legion. Two
months later I was Secretary. To this day I am not sure how this happened but I am glad it did
because it is a wonderful organisation in which to be involved.
As a fund raising exercise five other ladies and myself decided to go on a sponsored sailing
trip to raise money for our charity. The fact that we would be a crew of ladies filled the
Captain of the boat with fear and trepidation to say the least.
As well as raising a great deal of money, our action raised an enormous amount of publicity
including a visit from a researcher from Esther Rantzen and an appearance on her TV show.
More recently I have joined the Speakers panel for the British Legion as my sailing days are
probably over.
I intend to continue doing what I can, when I can and I will involve myself in the Clubs
activities in any way that I am able.
Presdent Tony thanked Margaret for an inspiring talk.
