Message in a Bottle arrives in Troon!

The Rotary Club of Troon is delighted to be supporting Message in a Bottle, an emergency information scheme which is provided free of charge by the Rotary Clubs of Alloway, Ayr, Girvan, Prestwick and Troon  and the Ayr Lions Club.

The scheme is fully supported by South Ayrshire Health and Social Care Partnership together with key partners including the Scottish Ambulance Service, Police Scotland, Scottish Fire and Rescue, the Community Safety Partnership and Voluntary Action South Ayrshire.

Message in a Bottle is aimed at anyone who feels vulnerable at home.  This will usually be elderly people but can be people of any age.  Troon Rotarians will deliver bottle packs to GP Surgeries, Dental Surgeries and Pharmacies in the town.  Carer and Support groups can also request a supply of packs.

The bottle pack gives you the means to alert the emergency services to important medical information and contact details, should an accident or sudden illness occur in your home.

The pack consists of:

  • A plastic bottle
  • A basic medical information form
  • Green and white emergency data link stickers, which are unique to the scheme

You complete the form with all of your relevant medical information and put this in the bottle, which you then place in your fridge. You put one of the stickers inside your front door, so that it’s clearly visible to any of the emergency services, and one of the stickers goes on your fridge. The green and white stickers are recognised by the emergency services.

The fridge has been chosen to store the bottles as 95% of all households have one and it is generally easy to find. Also, the insulation properties and construction of a fridge mean that in the event of a fire, the contents of the fridge usually survive.

President of Troon Rotary, Lesley Owens said, “ Message in a Bottle is a tried and tested scheme which can provide life saving information to emergency services. “
