Welcome to the Rotary Club of Cambridge Sawston

What is Rotary?

Rotary is short for Rotary International, a worldwide association of more than1.2 million members drawn from business and the professions. Founded in 1905 Rotary has some 30,000 local clubs for men and women in 166 countries who provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and work for goodwill and peace in the world.

Through regular fellowship, Rotarians find the inspiration to serve others and do so in the following ways:

  • Service to the local community, local charities and deserving causes
  • International Humanitarian Aid
  • Vocational Support for Students

The Object of Rotary:

The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster;

  1. The development of acquaintance as an opportunity of service;
  2. High ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations; and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity to serve society;
  3. The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business, and community life,
  4. The advancement of international understanding, goodwill and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

The Cambridge Sawston Club

The Club was charted in 1987 and is just one of 1,800 clubs in Great Britain and Ireland. The club has over thirty members and operates independently, but has a common bond with all other clubs as the ideals are the same and their activities are similar.

Where do we meet?

Our weekly meeting is held on a Tuesday evening at 7:15pm at the Red Lion at Whittlesford Bridge near Cambridge, a delightful 13th century coaching inn, where we enjoy fellowship, a very good reasonably priced meal and inspiring speakers.

It is through this regular contact and fellowship that Rotarians make time to serve the community and enjoy each other's company.

Here, this image shows a recent event taking place closeby - Spitfires celebrate 75 years since the Battle of Britain, flying over Duxford Village close to where the Cambridge Sawston Rotary Club meet.

For more details and directions, see: 'Meeting Information' in the right sidebar on the Home page.

What do we do?

We're a friendly, very active club of men and women from mainly South Cambridgeshire villages and we participate in a wide range of activities to serve the community at home and abroad. Our fundraising and community activities are divided into 4 main areas:

Over the years the club has raised nearly 400,000 pounds for local and international charities and good causes as well as personally undertaking a number of humanitarian projects in the local community.
