Sun 4th September 2016 at 08.30 - 16.30

Sunday 4th September 2016. Annual Rossendale Round the Hills Walk 18 miles from Marl Pits Sports Centre. Signing on from 8am, first walkers leaving at 8.30am. Community walk, no entry fee, but donations to Rotary to defray costs would be appreciated.

Last year nearly 300 people took part in the highly successsful 48th Rossendale Annual Round the Hills Walk on Sunday 6th September.

The challenging 18 mile circular route started at Marl pits Leisure Centre on Newchurch Road and included Cribden Hill, Goodshaw Hill, Clowbridge Reservoir and over the hills to Water and Waterfoot before ascending the highest hill, Cowpe Lowe ( 440 metres ,1442 ft) on the way back to Marl Pits.

There were six manned checkpoints along the route. The weather was excellent for walking with good visibility ensuring splendid views of Rossendale with Ingleborough  in the distance.

The walk was established by Walter Whittaker with the aim of encouraging local people to enjoy a long walk in the local hills. Adrian Watts became involved in the late 1950s and over the last ten years he has taken over the organisation of the walk  with the help of fellow Rotarians and friends.  This year a strong contingent of the Explorer Scouts Interact Group, based at Haslingden, assisted with the manning of checkpoints.

Adrian is keen to maintain the original aim of Walter Whittaker and consequently there is no admission fee for the walk.
