President Jane Allan opened tonight’s meeting of the Rotary Club of Motherwell and Wishaw by presented Honorary Life Membership Plaques to Dorothy Arthur and Anne Morrison in respect of the many years of valuable service given to the Club by their husbands, John Arthur and Ronald Morrison.
Our guest speaker was Jim Carruthers. Jim stays locally but was born in Forth. He is a Past President of Hamilton Burns Club and a Past Master of the Hamilton and Kilwinning No. 7 Masonic Lodge. Jim's talk was on Rabbie Burns and his involvement with Freemasonry. The essential qualification for admission into Freemasonry is a belief in a Supreme Being and membership is open to men of any race or religion who can fulfil this qualification. Freemasonry is not a religion nor is it a substitute for religion. Jim said that the mention of "Robert Burns" brings to mind images of red roses, starry eyed lovers and Tam o’ Shanter and the description “Scotland's "ploughman poet". But Burns did indeed echo the sentiments of many of his day calling for Liberty, Fraternity and Equality. Burn's commitment to the ideals of the Enlightenment came from his membership in the Masonic Lodge. He was initiated in Lodge St David Tarbolton in 1781. His Kilmarnock edition of poems was published by a brother Freemason and 350 members of the St John's Lodge, Kilmarnock subscribed to a copy for which Burns was paid £20.
