The speaker at tonight’s meeting of the Rotary Club of Motherwell and Wishaw was Superintendent Craig Ritchie from Police Scotland whose presentation was about "Community Engagement and Keeping People Safe". Craig is originally from Wishaw but now stays in Lanark. He joined the police twenty five years ago and has risen through the ranks. He is now part of the Police Scotland senior management team for Lanarkshire and he is presently based at Motherwell Police Station with other members of the management team. North Lanarkshire has a population of 338,000 and has three command areas comprising of Cumbernauld and Kilsyth, Coatbridge and Airdrie and Motherwell, Wishaw and Bellshill. He gave an update of the present position Police Scotland found itself in and with the ongoing needs for cuts in the public sector a number of difficult decisions will shortly have to be made. On a positive note he said reported crime was at a 40% low and it was down 36% since 2006/07. Firearm crimes were at a 33% low and homicides were at a 38% low. Craig replied to the large number of questions put to him by the interested members.
