Tonight, the members of the Rotary Club of Motherwell and Wishaw, and their guests, were entertained by Jock Brown, our guest speaker. Jock, a native of Hamilton, spoke on many aspects of his education and varied career.
The address began with Jock talking of his time at Hamilton Academy, where, in addition to achieving good academic results, he enjoyed success in school football, being in the Hamilton team which won the Scottish Cup. When he arrived at Cambridge University, Jock admitted that he had no idea of what to expect, from the university and from his fellow student, however, both were very welcoming and he made life-long friends during his studies. A football ‘blue’, he played against rivals Oxford three times, on the last occasion, captaining his team.
Jock spoke fondly of his time, working in Motherwell, with Ballantyne and Copland and of his career in law, reminiscing about his connection with our recent speaker, Lord Bonomy.
His time as the Chief Executive of Celtic FC was highlighted in Jock’s address, through his relationship with all the personalities within the club, dealings with the police, and club security, about his personal safety while in office, and, finally, the attitude of the press towards Celtic, and other football clubs, and the stories which would be “fabricated” by “sources”, at various levels, to discredit teams and individuals.
He then moved on to talk about his time in football commentating, having been introduced to television by Archie McPherson, touching on some memorable matches and the amount of preparation required before each match and how this had been made much easier by the availability of the internet.
Another excellent evening.
