The speaker at tonight’s meeting of the Rotary Club of Motherwell and Wishaw was Andy Harvey from Bothwell.

Andy was appointed Professor of Optics at Glasgow University in January 2012 having previously been a Professor in the School of Engineering and Physical Sciences at Heriot-Watt University where he was Director of the Industrial Doctorate Centre in Optics and Photonics Technologies.

He researches new imaging and optical measurement techniques at wavelengths from the visible, through the infrared to microwave frequencies, working with end users to exploit this research in fields ranging through remote sensing, surveillance and consumer imaging through to biomedicine and, in particular, ophthalmic imaging. Andy is Director of the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Intelligent sensing and Measurement.

His talk to members was about "The Scientific Method" which is a body of techniques for investigating phenomena, acquiring new knowledge, or correcting and integrating previous knowledge. He said that to be termed scientific, a method of enquiry is commonly based on empirical or measurable evidence subject to specific principles of reasoning. Andy gave a few amusing examples that helped members better understand the Scientific Method. Andy then went on to answer a number of searching questions put to him by members.
