The speaker, tonight, at the Rotary Club of Motherwell and Wishaw was Gareth Whitehead, who has had 15 years experience of the music industry, in performance, promotion and, latterly, education.
As the theme of his talk, he took ‘What not to do and who not to trust in the Music Industry!!!’. Gareth readily acknowledged that the music industry has a bad reputation for ‘ripping off’ naive performers and partners.
On leaving school, Gareth played in a number of bands before taking a degree course in sound engineering and electronics, at Glasgow Caledonian University.
After graduation, he became a partner in Kontakt Productions, running a recording studio, community based learning initiative, live sound equipment hire and record label. When the recording studio proved unprofitable, Gareth suffered a bigger share of the loss than his partner – his hard lesson in trust!
For the next few years, freelance work was the way forward, working as a sound engineer, in social care tuition in care homes and secure units and as an artist. On one occasion being hired to mime on a nationwide tour of a well-known tribute band!! Gareth worked hard to gain experience and had the reputation as an expert ‘jack of all trades’, founding record label bullet:dodge, touring with established bands and solo performers, performing as a DJ in tours of Europe and the US, including a visit to Hollywood.
In addition to his production activities, building on his work with young people, Gareth lectures in New College Lanarkshire which offers NQ, HNC and HND in the Music Industry. He also works in the Scottish Qualifications Authority developing, revising, managing and validating courses for other educational facilities all over Scotland.
Gareth gave full answers to a number of questions posed by the members and the vote of thanks was proposed by Club secretary, Gordon Megahy.
