Khmer Rouge Memorial

The guest speaker at last Thursday's meeting of the Rotary Club of Motherwell and Wishaw was Nathan Southern, son of the club's International Convenor, Malcolm Southern.

Nathan told the Club of his experiences working for the United Nations, in Cambodia, gathering evidence against the Khmer Rouge, regarding the extermination of the country’s elite in the notorious ‘Killing Fields’. Nathan spoke, very knowledgably, about this subject giving the background to the situation, its consequences and possible solutions.

Moving on to Bangladesh, he was involved in trying to end illegal child marriages where, due to local custom, one in three girls under fifteen years of age are still forced into arrange marriages. The new Bangladeshi government is proposing to make these marriages legal again and the team were involved in trying to persuade them, through negotiations, that this would not play well with the international community. In March 2017, after five terrorist attacks, in and around the capital, Dhaka, which were, largely, not reported in the Western press, Nathan, and his team, had to be evacuated, back to Cambodia!!

Nathan promoted Khmer Arts, a small Cambodian charity, trying to promote the art of dance as being worthy of support by the Club.

A good number of questions were posed by members and these were eloquently answered. The vote of thanks was proposed by Past President Charles Keeper.
