Speaker Rebecca Gorgon - World Affairs Seminar 2016

Tue, Sep 27th 2016 at 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

President Ewen Allan welcomed members and visitors from the Rotary Clubs of Alloa, Cupar and St Andrews, to the Club's meeting in the Best Western Scores Hotel. Following a recent raffle organised in connection with the Club's charity golf day the draw was made and it was advised a sum of £1740 was raised.

The speaker for the evening was Rebecca Gorgon, a pupil at Madras College. The Club had helped to sponsor Rebecca to the World Affairs Seminar in Wisconsin USA during the summer. This is organised each year for young people from all over the world, with a theme of global significance and with speakers from the top echelon of business, politics and government. This year's subject matter was "Water, a global resource to share and protect". Rebecca told us the participants were instructed in team building and negotiating skills. A water council like Silicon Valley has been set up in Milwaukee. They heard about water projects throughout the world and voluntary work in Uganda. They also had an exercise in freshwater crisis simulation diplomacy and a lecture from a member of US State Department. The subject of technology in water was discussed as was water conflict where there are conflicts of interest in the usage of rivers. Apart from the technical aspects of the Seminar, which Rebecca found most interesting and informative and which she hoped would help her in the future, she said the social aspect was very important and had made friends with people from all over the world. The Club's vote of thanks was given by member Ian Black.
