Dinner - Speaker Andy Strachan speaking about Men Sheds

Thu, Jun 1st 2017 at 12:55 pm - 2:00 pm

On Thursday 1st June 2017 President Brian Johnson welcomed 20 Club Rotarians and guest Rotarian Jack Dempsey from the Rotary Club of Kirkcaldy to this lunch time meeting which was held at the Gilvenbank Hotel, Glenrothes.

On reception, this week were Ron Page saying grace and Peter May.

Two apologies for absence were received.

Wilna Roger mentioned that our guest speaker Jenny Gilruth MP at last week’s fantastic Awards night had raised a motion in the Scottish Parliament during the week advising all in the Parliament about the great work we are doing in the community.

Will Wishart mentioned that the last event in the clubs Calendar to be organised is the Kids Out day on Wednesday 14th June 2017 which is once again taking place at the Deer Park near Cupar.

Our speaker this week was our own Andy Strachan speaking about Man Sheds. He mentioned that  a local group were looking to commence a non Profit making Men's Shed in the old Scout Hut in Poplar Road Glenrothes to support the people of Auchmuty  Men's Shed are a larger version of the typical man’s shed in the garden – a place where he feels at home and pursues practical interests with a high degree of autonomy. A Men's Shed offers this to a group of such men where members share the tools and resources they need to work on projects of their own choosing at their own pace and in a safe, friendly and inclusive venue. They are places of skill-sharing and informal learning, of individual pursuits and community projects, of purpose, achievement and social interaction. A place of leisure where men come together to work. A Shed’s activities usually involve making or mending in wood (e.g. carpentry, joinery, turning, carving, whittling, marquetry, furniture renovation) but may include metalworking (milling, sheet metal, welding, etc.) bike repair, gardening, electronics, tool renovation, boat renovation, model engineering (model railways, planes) and even building a car! Reclamation, reuse and restoration will feature strongly – and some say that is true of the men too! Although Sheds mostly attract older men, some have included men of any age, women and young people. Whichever activities are pursued the essence of a Shed is not a building, which some don’t have, but the network of relationships between the members.

The Rotary Vote of thanks was given by Lindsay Roy.

This week’s meeting on Thursday 8th June 2017 will be a lunch time meeting to be held at the Gilvenbank Hotel. please meet 12.45pm for starting at 12.55pm. On reception will be Peter May.
