Vote of thanks by Rotarian Alan Porter

Synopsis of Vote of Thanks to Joe Sheen, the Club’s RYLA candidate sent to RAF Henlow in
2016 who came to speak upon his experience to the Club on Tuesday 3rd January 2017
As is happily always the case within our Club, the visit of a “youngster” caused considerable
interest, particularly when he came to speak upon his experience of a scheme where his
involvement was enabled by our Club.
Alan congratulated Joe on his presentation. While understandably nervous at the prospect of
“singing for his supper” to us crusty old Rotarians (or so we would seem to him), Joe did very well
and Alan thanked him for coming and for a very illuminating and well-illustrated report of his
weekend at the RAF Camp. Members had been reminded that the occasion was well flavoured by
the military surroundings and activities with which Joe and his colleagues, both men and young
ladies, became involved.
Alan suggested that the numerous exploits and activities with which Joe had become involved all
combined to help him and his colleagues to develop leadership skills, the ability to work in teams,
to learn from each other and to support each other in a common purpose. Joe had been generous in
his praise for the event saying that he had learnt a lot, notably improving social skills and boosting
his self-confidence as well as learning how to play a part in a team – both to follow and to lead.
One area that Joe found very interesting was the way in which problem solving was carried out,
with everyone piling in with suggestions and solutions coming through from trial and error.
In summary, Alan thanked Joe for his visit and confirmed to him that his enthusiasm and excitement
of his experiences and the value as well as the fun that he had obviously taken from the event was
exactly what we Rotarians were delighted to see – that was the whole objective in selecting him and
sending him on the course. The Club joined Alan in a well-earned round of applause, quietly in the
knowledge that this was another splendid outcome for a Castle initiative and that one young man
had been given some rapid and focussed experience of life in an environment not often possible-
and had both benefitted and enjoyed it.
