District 1010 Young Chef North & South Finals
District 1010 Young Chef North & South Finals 21st & 28th January 2017
This year’s District Young Chef finals had 18 competitors ranging from 12 to 17 years of age.
The north finals on the 21st January were held in Aberdeen College with six finalists. Lecturer Robert Bruce led judges Nick Robins and DG Roddy Duncan through the complex marking system looking at all aspects of cooking, skills, hygiene, presentation, table setting, food temperature and taste as well as costings and dietary considerations.
The winner was Lucia Savage from Inverness who is just 12 years old. Her menu of a grilled fig in a parmesan basket with beetroot and horseradish relish, pancetta wrapped chicken on a bed of polenta with roasted broccoli and pine nuts and mascarpone and passionfruit roulade was beautifully presented on a well thought out table presentation.
Twelve competitors took part the following weekend at Dundee & Angus College. The judges led by our long-term friend Rosie along with Dereck, Daniel and DG Roddy had a difficult job to choose a winner. The atmosphere was fantastic all morning with everyone helping and encouraging one another.
Maddie Owen took a well-deserved first place with Matthew Turnball in second and Charlotte, third. The standard was truly impressive. Parents, helpers and Rotarians were treated to a spectacular array of beautiful food.
The Regional final (8 District champions from 4 Districts) will be held in Dundee on 11th March.
