Autism Bedfordshire is an independent charity providing information, advice, emotional and practical support to individuals with Autistic Spectrum Conditions, their parents/carers, families and associated professionals throughout Bedfordshire.

We were founded in 1991 by parents of children with autism, to share information and support each other.  Over the years, we have expanded and developed our services, building a wealth of knowledge, experience and expertise in the process. We have earned a widespread reputation for being an excellent provider of quality support for people with autism and their families.

Autism Bedfordshire aims to:-
– reduce social isolation and improve the quality of life for people with autism and their families in Bedfordshire, and
– improve awareness, knowledge and understanding about autism amongst families, professionals and the wider community.

We want people with autism to have the same opportunities as people who are not on the autistic spectrum and for them and their families to enjoy fulfilled and rewarding lives.

An introduction to Autism and Autism Bedfordshire. A presentation by Gill Christmas from AB. Explained What is A? A spectrum condition from mild disability to extreme. Main diagnosis shows difficulty with Social Communication, integration and imagination and change. People with A will have difficulty with all 3. It is like communicating with text as they are unable to pick up on tone of voice, sarcasm, body language and facial expression. They also suffer sensory overload where they can hear every noise and see everything about them at once. This leads to severe stress and then they can suffer a breakdown. Bedford has around 1600 people with the condition. BA supports the community with the following: Sat AM family support & activities, evening social clubs for ages 10-17, summer activities ages 3-17, adult skills courses inc cooking, employment, travel etc, adult social groups, support with employment-80% are unemployed, telephone helpline, parent info+training, Autism awareness training for professional groups and advocacy for people with Autism. Regards Leslie
