President Andrew Murray's "After the Tea Towel" talk on famous Scots was about Robert Angus Smith. Born in 1817, Smith was ahead of his time, carrying out research into air pollution and being credited with the phrase "Acid Rain". Andrew’s choice of subject was topical given that tonight’s guest speaker at the Rotary Club of Motherwell and Wishaw talked on the quality of Scottish water.
Peter Brown, Scottish Water’s Water Quality Regulation Manager addressed the members on the quality of Scotland’s drinking water. During his presentation he said that the vast majority of water in Scotland’s environment is unpolluted and, with treatment by Scottish Water, fit for customer consumption.
Drinking water quality in Scotland is tested to ensure all customers enjoy its look and taste, and is at its highest ever level of quality with over 300,000 tests being carried out each year. He said that drinking water is easier to treat if it arrives at his works in the best possible condition. That is why, working together with land managers, owners and tenants, they launched the Sustainable Land Management (SLM) Incentive Scheme, last April, to support innovative and sustainable approaches to prevent diffuse pollution from entering our water supply system, helping to protect this vital resource. Scottish Water has been delighted with the response to the scheme and they have recently identified additional measures that can be supported and would encourage anyone with an interest to come forward and help play a part in the scheme. Peter said that the potential benefits of Sustainable Land Management were an improved drinking water quality/treatment, net cost benefit for customers, environmental benefit (reduce - energy, chemical, carbon), benefit land users e.g. save soils, save chemical inputs, partnership working which he said all goes to demonstrates Scottish Water’s Vision to be Scotland’s most trusted and valued company.
After Peter answered a number of questions, Past President Jim Robertson proposed the vote of thanks.'What We Do' Main Pages:
