Tonight, the members of the Rotary Club of Motherwell and Wishaw held our President's Dinner, accompanied by spouses, partners and guests, to witness the presentation of our Citizen of the Year Award and our Young Achiever of the Year Award. These awards are made annually and this year’s winners were both worthy recipients.

The Rev Haisley Moore, formerly minister at Wishaw Old Parish Church, and past member of the Motherwell and Wishaw Rotary Club, read the citation for the Citizen of the Year Award winner, Tom Donaldson. Tom, who was the Rev Moore's Session Clerk, received the award in recognition of his involvement, over 55 years, with St Andrew’s First Aid, formerly the St Andrew’s Ambulance Association.

He has been involved in most of the major events over the last five decades including the Commonwealth Games, football internationals and, in January 1971, he witnessed, at first hand, the horrors of the Ibrox Football disaster. In recent times, Tom has helped train over 2,500 First Aiders in the Lanarkshire area.

Tom is, without doubt, a member of our community fully deserving of the title – Citizen of the Year.

The Young Achiever Award citation was given by Joy Gillespie, a manager at the Windmills Cafe in Brandon Parade East, Motherwell which is committed to investing in young people with learning difficulties.

Joy informed the guests that our winner, Graham Hughes, started at Windmills eighteen months ago. At that time, his support worker attended to all his needs and Graham's vocabulary and social skills were limited.

During his time at Windmills, there has been a complete transformation. Graham’s reliance on his support worker has decreased as his self-confidence has grown. He takes orders and delivers food and beverages to the customers. Graham is, currently, undertaking a cookery qualification that will enable to prepare meals. He is truly an outstanding young man.

The Young Achiever Award, the John Mair Trophy, was presented to Graham by Margaret Mair, widow of the late Past President and District Governor.

The musical entertainment, throughout the evening, was provided by Shonagh Murray.

Senior Vice President Andrew Steven proposed a comprehensive vote of thanks.
