Our guest speaker at tonight's meeting of the Rotary Club of Motherwell and Wishaw was Samantha Reilly, the Community Fundraiser at CHAS, Children's Hospices Across Scotland, formerly known as Children’s Hospice Association Scotland.
She told members that for over twenty years CHAS has been caring for children and young people, with life-limiting conditions, and their families by offering palliative care, family respite and support. During this time CHAS has built two hospices, developed its outreach service, CHAS at Home, and established a presence in hospitals, through working with Diana Children’s Nurses.
Samantha explained that over the past few years CHAS has undertaken a full review of the services it offers after initiating wide-ranging research, to ensure that it gives families support at the highest levels and it campaigns for improvements to palliative care over the whole of Scotland.
She gave the staggering statistic that CHAS still only reaches one in three families who could use their services and many of the public, including health professionals, are unaware of their existence.
However, at the heart of all this is its absolute commitment to supporting children and families when they need it most. Reaching every one of those children is the aim of CHAS. Knowing that your child may die before you do, is the unthinkable reality that thousands of families across Scotland have to cope with every day. Each week, three children die in Scotland from an incurable condition. CHAS is dedicated to supporting every single member of these families as they face the toughest challenge of their lives. It is committed to making sure that no matter how short their time together may be, it is a time filled with happiness and fun. CHAS makes sure children have the opportunity for experiences they cannot have elsewhere, to feel the wind and sunshine on their faces, to sparkle, to laugh, to smile and to have those memorable moments of joy – moments that will be treasured forever.
Samantha thanked the Club for our support, over many years, and for the thousands of pounds we have either donated or facilitated through our Callander Cycle Challenge.
After Samantha answered a number of questions posed by the members, Past President John McDonald proposed the vote of thanks.'What We Do' Main Pages:
