Beach Clean – 2018 – Troon Rotary club
In this twelfth year of clearing the coastline of litter and rubbish, a group of Rotarians supported by neighbours from the area, cleared the North Shore beach in Troon on Saturday morning. They were joined by a local councillor, visitors from South Lanarkshire and Irvine and South Ayrshire, a representative from South Ayrshire suppliers, two families with young children and a fellow Rotarian from Kilmarnock.
Fourteen bags of rubbish were collected. Again this year, no plastic carrier bags and only a few plastic bottles were collected. Although this result may look disappointing, it is due to a few factors. A regular litter pick by Friends of Troon Beaches has greatly reduced the rubbish along the shoreline in Troon. Secondly, the lack of strong westerly or south westerly winds which usually deposit seaborne debris has helped keep the beach clean. The cold easterly and offshore winds have discouraged visitors and picnickers at Easter. Although the bag count outcome appears to be disappointing, the objective was to have a cleaner beach and this was achieved. Special thanks go to lady who provided cakes and buns!
