Tonight marked the start of the summer speaker programme of the Rotary Club of Motherwell and Wishaw which sees individual members speak on a subject close to their heart.
Our opening speaker was Jim Rae who addressed the members on his newest African project involving the humble (if expensive) cashew nut.
Jim has been to Africa a number of times, working to improve the quality of water through an infiltration system that he devised, primarily in Malawi and Gambia.
Jim advised that he is now CEO of a UNICEF project called the West African Cashew Trading Company which has the twin aims of growing a cashew tree line from Senegal to the Gambia and building a Cashew Processing Operation in the Gambia. The main aim of planting the tree line is to, eventually, halt the spread of the Sahara Desert into the Gambia and Jim stated that he suggested to the Gambian government that they turn this preventative measure into a paying project by using cashew trees. Building a processing centre will ensure that the many thousands of existing cashew farmers, and those newly employed in the new forest, will not have to export their produce for processing, resulting in more profit for the farmers.
Jim is hopeful that the World Bank will shortly agree the financing of this commendable project which Jim estimates will take 7 - 9 years to come to fruition.
After Jim answered a number of questions posed by members, our new Junior Vice President Katrina Gibbons, who chaired the meeting, thanked Jim for his very interesting talk.
