Thu, Sep 6th 2018 at 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm

Ajmal Mushtaq, of Mushtaqs Restaurant, Hamilton, will address the members
H&R: Tom Agnew & Ian St John
VoT: Tom McPherson

The speaker at tonight’s meeting of the Rotary Club of Motherwell and Wishaw was, well known Hamilton chef, Ajmal Mushtaq.

Ajmal graduated with a LLB and spent ten years in London as a very successful management consultant working with many international companies including Lloyd’s Bank where he developed the Faster Payments Service.

Despite his success, his first love was cooking and he returned to Hamilton and bought out his father and uncle who ran the Taj Mahal restaurant in Almada Street. He renamed the restaurant and Mushtaqs was created. Initially he had a staff of five but now employs over 60. Mushtaqs expanded to having the biggest kitchen in Scotland and Ajmal, who has won Chef of the Year four times running, plans to open the biggest restaurant in Scotland on the existing site.

He said the success of his business was down to a number of factors that included understanding the business you worked in, making sure it was business fit, streamlining the business, promoting the business and he ended by saying that the seeds of today are the fruits of tomorrow. After the members posed a number of questions, Tom McPherson proposed the vote of thanks.

Sports Convenor Charles Keeper updated members on the recent secondary school’s golf competition, held at Wishaw Golf Club, which was won by St Aidan’s.

Past President Paul Begley gave the results of the penultimate pigeon race. The winning birds belonged to Jim Peat, Willie Talbot, Des Donnelly and Bill McCallum. The overall winners will be announced next Thursday after this week’s race.

The Numbers Club winners were Paul Begley, Tom McPherson and Bill McCallum and the weekly bonus ball was Andrew Murray.
