Lunch Time meeting - speaker from Alzheimers Scotland

Thu, Dec 6th 2018 at 12:55 pm - 1:55 pm

On Thursday 6th December 2018 President Anne Sampson welcomed 18 Club Rotarians, and guest speaker Yvonne Georgeson to this lunch time meeting which was held at the Gilvenbank Hotel, Glenrothes.

On reception, this week were Iain Oates and Geoff Sampson who said grace.

President Anne Sampson mentioned that money had been transferred to Ross Fisher of the local Taekwondo Club. Anne also mentioned that help would be required for the Santa Collection at ASDA’s on Saturday 15th December where the proceeds would go to the Luke Veelenturf appeal.

Geoff Sampson mentioned that we would be participating against the Rotary Clubs of Anstruther and Dunfermline Carnegie at the Gilvenbank Hotel on Thursday 3rd January 2019 in the next round of the Gavel competition.

Our speaker this week was Yvonne Georgeson from Alzheimer’s Scotland when we presented a cheque for £705 being the result of Iain Oates Glasgow run. Yvonne ran a film made by three Dementia sufferers where they discussed the usefulness of I pads and also about their individual conditions.

Dementia is an illness that affects the brain, making it harder to remember things or think as clearly as before. Dementia can affect every area of human thinking, feeling and behaviour, but each person with dementia is different - how the illness affects someone depends on which area of their brain is damaged.

Yvonne mentioned that The Kingdom Shopping Centre is the first business in Glenrothes to be recognised as being dementia-friendly through the Dementia Friendly Glenrothes initiative.

Launched last year, the initiative is a partnership between The Fife Health and Social Care Partnership and Alzheimer Scotland and aims to support people living with dementia to remain a valued part of their community.  This includes supporting people to continue to shop, use public transport or visit places like local cafes or sports centres.

With over 90,000 people living with dementia in Scotland and the number on the rise, increasing greater awareness and understanding of dementia and helping communities to be more inclusive of those living with dementia is a key mission to help make sure nobody faces dementia alone. Businesses are just one section of society who have a big role to play and the Kingdom Shopping Centre management team have been keen to play their part.

The Rotary Vote of thanks was given by Brian Johnson
