October Meeting

STAR

Joint Presidents Cheryl and Ruth with Maggie Forkes of STAR

STAR- Somerset Trust for Arts and Recreation, is our Joint Presidents Cheryl and Ruth's chosen Charity for their year in office. STAR's mission is,

"Building resilience in Children and Young People in need."

On Wednesday 3 October, Maggie Forkes, Chairperson and Trustee came to speak to us at Oake Manor, about STAR's work and the difference it can make enriching the lives of young Somerset people.

Article 31 of UN Convention on the Rights of the Child states,

" Every child has the right to rest and leisure ,

to engage in play and  recreational activities

appropriate to the age of the child and to

participate freely in cultural life and the arts."

Many young people in Somerset, because of their situation in life, are excluded from opportunities and experiences which other children and their parents, take for granted or, can at least afford!   The fees and equipment for joining Scouts, Guides, Brownies for example or joining a football team, horse riding or music lessons or drama classes means they are out of reach for many.

We were told of case studies where children and young people had their lives turned around by the simple provision of such an activity;  one young lady is now planning to go to University. There is a causal link between lack of opportunity, behavioural problems and low achievement in school which, if the circle can be broken, releases the child into a new life - All this by the simple provision of funds to enable them to follow an interest or dream and enrich their lives.

Help is for young people in Somerset from 5-25 years, such as  young carers, who do not have the chance to be involved outside the home plus those who become isolated,  develop low self esteem and left out; children whose behaviour deteriorates as they struggle in their lives,  those who cannot achieve their dreams and for whom achieving happiness is not possible.

As ever, Funding is the key. Somerset County Council has, due to 'the cuts', removed its funding to STAR.  As STAR does not actually provide the activities, but works with third parties to provide them, STAR cannot apply to Children in Need, for example.

                                                 So, funding IS key.

During this year Cheryl and Ruth will work with us to provide funds for this charity. Will you help?   Further information can be found at their website www.somerset-star.org.uk
