Suzanne Mathie was the speaker at tonight’s meeting of the Rotary Club of Motherwell and Wishaw.
Suzanne’s background is in nursing and for 18 years she lived in Sydney, Australia. She now works, for Alzheimer Scotland, as a key family support worker based in the Dementia Resource Centre in Motherwell.
She gave the members the benefit of her extensive knowledge on dementia, a progressive loss of powers of the brain. Suzanne advised that there are many kinds of dementia, the most common being Alzheimer’s disease, with others that included vascular dementia, Lewy body dementia, frontotemporal dementias and alcohol-related dementias and that it is possible to have more than one type of dementia.
In 2017, Scotland had over 90,000 people with dementia, and, while it is most common in older people, it can affect people in their 40s or 50s or even younger. When giving the signs of Dementia, Suzanne stressed that it was very important not to jump to any conclusions. Confusion or forgetfulness does not mean someone has dementia, nor is dementia an inevitable part of growing older. Many other conditions such as infections, depression or the side effects of medicines can cause similar problems. If you are worried, Suzanne suggested that, in the first instance, you should contact your doctor, who, if they can find no other reasons for the symptoms, may refer you to see a hospital specialist who can carry out further tests. As dementia can only be diagnosed after ruling out other possible causes of the symptoms, this is why a full medical assessment is important.
After Suzanne answered a number of questions, Bill McCallum proposed the vote of thanks.
The rollover bonus ball winner was Hugh Graham who, along with Tom McPherson and Willie Talbot, was a winner in the monthly numbers club draw.'What We Do' Main Pages:
