The guest speaker at tonight’s meeting of the Rotary Club of Motherwell and Wishaw was the Right Rev. Susan Brown, Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland.

During her address, which was on challenges to the Church, Susan said that we should always remember that “simple things make a difference to people’s lives”. She went on to talk about only a few of the ways that congregations, throughout Scotland, are rising to contemporary problems. By hosting food banks or summer schemes providing cooked meals for children during the school holidays, lunch clubs and dementia cafes, men’s sheds, radio stations working with young people and no-dig gardens as part of an eco-congregation.

Susan is coming to the end of her year in office and will be returning to her charge, Dornoch Cathedral, but she has enjoyed working ecumenically with the representatives of many faiths, including a trip to India, where she said, “it was a humbling experience for people thanking you just for turning up to see them”.

Her theme for the year is Walking with…, and she has walked 9 miles of the Pilgrim Way, walked with Christian and Muslim women and is looking forward to walking with members of the Woman’s Guild, Boys’ Brigade and Girls’ Brigade.

The members and guests enjoyed an excellent and informative evening.

After the question and answer session, David McLeod proposed the vote of thanks and Susan presented all in attendance with a gift of a slice of Dornoch wood, with small footprints on it, as thanks for ‘walking with her’.
