Two senior pupils, from Coltness High School, gave a presentation to the members of Motherwell and Wishaw Rotary Club at tonight’s meeting.
Jai Harkin and Ben Rudden are going to spend a gap year in Chile and Japan, respectively, teaching English as a foreign language before going to university to complete their studies.
They had to go through a stiff selection process, run, on the Isle of Coll, by the Project Trust which was established, in 1967, to promote Educational Gap Years, sending roughly 300 school-leavers overseas, annually, to volunteer in mainly Teaching, Social Care and Outward Bound Projects across Africa, Asia and the Americas.
It will cost Ben and Jai £6,200 each to participate in their respective Gap Years and they gave the members a flavour of their fundraising activities, so far. Ben has organised a race night, raising over £1,700, and Jai arranged a raffle for a football hospitality day that brought in over £1,000.
Ben will be staying in the small village, Toya, on Japan’s north island, with Jai living with a family in Chile’s capital, Santiago. Both the pupils are aiming to improve their Japanese and Spanish language skills by teaching conversational English to school children.
The students answered a number of questions posed by the members and Tom McPherson proposed the vote of thanks.'What We Do' Main Pages:
