TuT Guided Tour: Royal Opera House
Wed 22nd May 2019 at 10.15 - 14.30
Our visit to the Royal Opera House Covent Garden included a guided tour highlighting the recent additions and improvements
Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London
Our party of 20 enjoyed an incredibly interesting tour of this world class opera house led by Ruth, our enthusiastic, humorous and knowledgeable Aussie guide. There has been a theatre on the site since 1732 and the present building is the third one and was the subject of two very costly major extensions and rebuilds over the past twenty years to create the present fabulous opera house and facilities.
Our extensive tour took in such things as a brief visit to the Royal seating area in the opera house, the wonderful floral hall, the ballet training facilities, the dress and costume preparation areas and the highly impressive Rolls Royce designed scenery changing system. Ruth told us the resultant Opera house is now regarded as one of the top five in the World. The complex is staffed by around 1100 people. A ticket to the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden is incredibly expensive, but I think we were all very impressed with just what a wonderful place this is.
After our tour, the whole group enjoyed a convivial lunch at the historic and atmospheric Bow Street Tavern, immediately opposite the Opera House. Bow street itself played its part in the history of the founding of our police force, so needless to say, quite a number of early police force pictures!
