The speaker at tonight’s meeting of the Rotary Club of Motherwell and Wishaw was Margaret Mitchell, Conservative list MSP for Central Scotland.
Margaret was brought up in Coatbridge, attending Coatbridge High School, before training to be a primary school teacher at Hamilton College. She taught in primary schools in Coatbridge and Airdrie before moving to Bothwell Primary School. Her husband, Henry, is a Past President of Bothwell and Uddingston Rotary Club. While at Coatbridge High, through their Debating Society, she got her first taste of politics and, with a friend, joined the Airdrie Conservatives.
She believes that education is a great leveller and, in addition to the qualifications she already held, studied for, and was awarded, a BA degree from the Open University.
While representing Ferniegair, as their elected councillor, she was appointed a Justice of the Peace and, as a result, she gained a respect, for and love of the law, resulting in her studying for a being awarded a law degree from Strathclyde University.
She stood as a Conservative when the Scottish Parliament first came into being, but was unsuccessful, then taking an advisor’s role with the, then, Conservative leaders David McLetchie and Lord James Douglas Hamilton.
Margaret was elected as a regional member of the Scottish Parliament, in 2007, and she now holds a number of positions in the committee structure.
At the end of her address, Margaret responded to the large number of questions put to her by the members and Past President John McDonald proposed the vote of thanks.
The winners of the monthly bonus ball were Tom Sleith, Tom McPherson and Andrew Steven.
