Club Aims and Objectives 2019 - 2020

Club Aims and Objectives 2019 - 2020

Introduction

The 2018-2019 year, under the excellent leadership of Presidents Rosemary Bentley, Michael Sant and Michael Brooke, ably supported by Hon. Secretary Sue Hewerdine and Hon. Treasurer Mary Davies and the Chairs of Committees, Pauline Owen, Stephen Finch and Richard Cunningham, was a remarkably successful year with a wide range of projects and social events undertaken.

We incoming Presidents wish to record our own and the Club’s gratitude to the 2018 - 2019 team.

The 2019 2020 year will commence with Past President Maggie Hughes taking the lead. She will be followed by Richard Cunningham, a first time President of the Club and Past President Sheelagh Lloyd Jones. Sharing the presidency has worked well in the past and is an approach which enables a first volunteer to gain experience of leading the Club. We have discussed and agreed our collegiate approach to the Presidency and that we will in turn organise a key social event for members of the club and their partners.

Club Aims and Objectives 2019-2020

Although new members have joined the club recently the age profile has not decreased. As Presidents for 2019-2020 we are keen to take positive action to attract young leaders to our club. Details of how we propose to approach this is detailed in the membership section.

We also believe it will be useful for the club to discuss the frequency of meetings particularly in the months of December, January and February.

RCCB was chartered in 1997 and has been consistently vibrant and active, whilst continuing to value friendship and equality of opportunity. The strengths of the Club include supporting and encouraging participation by young members of the Interact Clubs of Whitchurch High School, Howell’s School and Llandaff Cathedral School. The Club has close links with Tongwynlais and Whitchurch Primary Schools, plus Bro Ederyn Comprehensive School. We also have an active Rotakids Club at Whitchurch Primary School.

The Club continues to sponsor a group of young competitors as detailed later.

The Club will continue to support a range of community activities requiring a regular commitment from members.

Our International commitment will continue to support schemes in M'bale, Uganda and the KIVA global investment imitative. We will continue to support disaster relief through the purchase of Shelterboxes and/or other emergency kits as recommended plus the maintenance of a Reserve Fund for use in global emergencies.

The Club's fundraising activities will continue through Bucket Collection(s) at Christmas (with musical support), the International Quiz, a curry and entertainment evening, and concert given by the City of Cardiff and Vale of Glamorgan Youth Orchestra.

Social events will include a Christmas Carol Concert, the St.David's Day Breakfast (the Big Breakfast) and othersocial events and visits. The support and involvement of members remains consistently high and provides the driving force behind the wide range of activities pursued by the Club

The Club needs to consider and implement innovative ways of encouraging younger people to participate through satellite clubs and "virtual" clubs via social media, where the requirement to attend meetings on regular basis is replaced by internet communications and attendance at fund raising activities and social events.

Management of the Club

The three Presidents will meet regularly to ensure the year runs smoothly. Each of us will fulfil the Club's obligations to Rotary, such as attending the District Conference in October, Rotary GB&I Conference (now known as Rotary GB&I Showcase) in May, District Council and Area meetings depending on which President is in Office at the time. We urge members to seriously consider joining us at District and Rotary GB&I conferences as they are enjoyable and educational experiences.

We also want to promote the social and fellowship aspect of club membership and will organise Pimms on the Patio, an afternoon tea and tour of Insole court on 18th December 2019 and possibly a Treasure Hunt.

Council is the executive of the club and makes decisions or recommendations to the club for approval.

Council will meet every six weeks at Whitchurch golf club and membership will be:

President Depending on which President is in Office although all Presidents will seek to attend

Presidents Elect Liz Davies

Treasurer Mary Davies

Secretary Sue Hewerdine

Chair of International Ro Linton

Chair of Community Steve Finch

Chair of Youth Helen Davies

Council minutes will be available for members to read via the ‘members only’ section of the club website. There will also be regular reports of Council discussions to the members.

Club Administration

The club will continue to meet at Whitchurch (Cardiff ) Golf Club, Pantmawr road, Cardiff, CF14 7TD on Wednesday mornings at 7.30 am, with any 5th Wednesday in the month designated as an evening meeting.

The Club’s finances operate through two bank accounts: the House account and the Charity account. Council members will be given regular reports on the account activity. The accounts will be examined by examiners approved by the Club members at the AGM

The Club will hold a SGM in November and the AGM in May. These meetings will be held in accordance with Rotary rules.

Club Organisation

Committees – club activities will be co-ordinated by three committees:

International and Foundation

Community and Vocational

Youth Services

Detailed plans for each committee are also on this web-site

With the exception of the President and the Secretary, all members will serve on a specific committee. However the Club is aware of the need for cross Club initiatives for some activities such as reading in schools and fund raising events.

The President and the Hon. Secretary will be ex-officio members of all committees. Wherever possible committee meetings will be held during normal club meetings.

Speakers /Programme

An outline programme for the year has been prepared, including visiting speakers, and each President has agreed to recruit speakers during their term

Relationships with other clubs

The Club will continue to seek co-operation with other Rotary Clubs, especially in Area 4 and District 1150, by means of exchanging information, attending social functions and fund raising events, and other joint activities where appropriate.

Financial Support for Charities

We shall continue to support:

Our own charity, the Rotary Foundation

Purple for Polio

Cancer Research Wales

The 5Cs

Shelter Box

The Presidents would like to support Llamau a Welsh charity helping vulnerable young people and women and will continue to ask members to donate, in kind, to the Huggard Centre, Paradise Run and Northlands.

Membership

Since Rotary began as a movement and Cardiff Breakfast was established the world has undergone much social change. The ability to attract and retain younger members is essential if Rotary and our club are to survive. This need is recognised at a national level and needs to be addressed at club level.

Younger people have many calls on their time with work, families etc but nevertheless have a desire to give something back to their communities. We are therefore planning to offer an alternative meeting time of our club to support the involvement of younger people. Keen supporters such as Bethan Powell and Samantha Barry are unable to attend our Wednesday morning meetings but still want to be part of the Rotary family. We therefore propose to offer them the opportunity to meet once a month, at a venue and time of their choice where children will also be welcome.

As always we will continue to urge you to be cognisant of the need to attract new members of all ages to our Wednesday morning club and consider how we can ensure meetings are attractive to others who also lead busy lives but would welcome the opportunity to serve their community and enjoy the fellowship of Rotary.

The offer of Associate Membership is available to those who would like to gain more experience of Rotary before committing to full membership.
