The guest speaker at tonight’s meeting of the Rotary Club of Motherwell and Wishaw was Jeff Frew, Development Officer for the West of Scotland with Cycling UK and an accomplished mountaineer.

Jeff gave an interesting, and informative talk of the work that Cycling UK does promoting cycling. In particular, he highlighted a number of the initiatives being undertaken by all eleven Development Officers covering Scotland to promote The Big Bike Revival, a national project that aims to encourage new and returning cyclists to get back on their bikes. These include community cycle club development, offering local groups support, training and guidance to run their cycling groups and activities to the benefit of their local community, the Belles on Bikes network, a series of women's cycling groups across Scotland, Play on Pedals, a partnership project with Cycling Scotland, Play Scotland and the Bike Station, a Glasgow based project enabling every pre-school child to learn to ride a bike, the Edinburgh All-ability Bike Club, which works with anyone needing a little bit of extra support to get cycling. This could include older people, people with complex health conditions, disabled people and anyone else needing a bit extra support to get riding and many more.

He also touched on the efforts to increase the number of cycle paths in our area and contribution that electric bikes are making to encourage many people to return to cycling.

Jeff went on to give “two talks for the price of one”, the second, on his support for Community Action Nepal, a charity working, mainly, in health, education and community, in an area he had come to love through his involvement in mountaineering.

Jeff’s talks were followed by a lively question and answer session and Hugh Graham proposed the vote of thanks.
