Peter McCrossan will give his Summer Talk which had to be postponed due to a power cut at the Bentley Hotel
VoT: David McLeod

The speaker at tonight’s Zoom meeting of the Rotary Club of Motherwell and Wishaw our member, Peter McCrossan, who gave his Summer Talk from last year which has to be postponed due to a power cut at the Bentley Hotel.

Peter’s subject was his hobby, stage management in amateur theatre, and for the majority of us, who have no experience in this field, Peter’s talk was most illuminating, beginning by taking us though the numerous productions he has been worked on and how he became involved.

He highlighted and explained the extensive effort that goes on behind the scenes to ensure that his productions are as ‘professional’ as possible, starting with choosing a venue and putting together a production team.

With the assistance of an excellent PowerPoint presentation, Peter described the role of a stage manager, theatre language, function of the prompt book, scene design and set building and the sequence of events to open the show. He advised that, currently, a typical show can cost as much as £50k - £60k to produce.

In his Stage Manager role, Peter has also had the opportunity to work in a number of theatres and some of the slides highlighted the vast difference in the decoration of the buildings from front of house to backstage!!

How do theatres go forward following the Coronavirus outbreak? Given the current situation relating to social distancing and theatres requiring full houses to be viable, Peter gave some suggestions, but, realistically, it will be some time before we are able to enjoy performances.

After a lively question and answer session, David McLeod proposed the vote of thanks.
