Marling and Wycliffe schools compete in the Youth Speaks District final

The Rotary Club of Severn Vale put forward two Intermediate age group teams and one Senior at the Rotary 1100 District final in Maisemore Village Hall on Saturday 11th February.

The Marling School intermediate group team of Atticus Lynham, Charlie Bratley and James McGarry debated “GCSE should be replaced with something more in keeping with 21st century education” whilst the Wycliffe Preparatory School intermediate  team of Angus Newland, Leo Benn and Seraphine Mossman fought out “This house believes that plastic is the most damaging invention known to mankind”. They came up against very strong competition from Redmaids’ High School who took first place and Katherine Lady Berkeley’s School who were runners up.

In the senior age group Marling School’s Joshua Glover, Milo Halton and George Herbert debated “We should not cancel the art just because we disagree with the artist” with convincing arguments from both proposer and opposer. They narrowly missed out to the team from Redland Green School from Bristol who took first place leaving Marling as the runners up.

The Rotary Club of Severn Vale was represented by President Bob Roberts, Vice President Nick Ellwood and Junior Vice President nominee Andrew James who came to support their teams. Bob said “Public speaking is one of the most valuable life skills so hopefully all those who took part will have gained from the experience as well as having an enjoyable day.”
