BurnAid Day 2023

A 'Day to Remember' for young burn victims and their families

It was back in March 2005 when our Honorary member, Syd Handy, attended the District 1060 Conference held that year in Guernsey. There was a speaker from a small local charity called ‘Burnaid’, which was set up to help child burn survivors, receiving treatment at the Birmingham Children’s Hospital, and to support their families.

Syd was very moved by the presentation and later said to the speaker “I will arrange a day to remember for your children and their families”. So started the ‘Burnaid’ day out which has taken place each August, organised initially by The Rotary Club of Stourport but now, for the second year, with Bewdley Rotary taking the lead, and still with Syd at the helm and doing a lot of the organisation.

The event based around Stourport Treasure Island took place this year on Wednesday August 9th when over 40 children and their families were given a ‘Day to Remember’ by Syd who was ably assisted by past Stourport Rotary member, Cliff Brewer, and several members of Bewdley Rotary.

This event is financially supported by our District which was represented not only with a visit from District Governor Amal Rampal but also by Bill and Margaret Elliott representing District Community Service team and Kids Out who also contributed financially. It was a pleasure also to welcome Councillor Chris Rogers, who represents Stourport on Severn on the Worcestershire County Council.

Thanks must go to John and Margaret Ready owners of Playland, without whose generous support this event could not happen. Also to Henry and Christine who own Treasure Island, Tom and Jamie owners of The River King, Russ Stokes, entertainer and magician, to all at the Port House who served an excellent lunch and to Colin Hill for taking all the photographs.

There is no doubt this was a very special day for the children and their families who all went home with big smiles on their faces and happy memories.
