Wheelie Good Idea Pub Walk

Mon, Jun 24th 2013 at 6:30 pm - 11:30 pm

This is a three mile walk around the environs of Bury St Edmunds to raise funds for Wheel Power, a charity that funds the cost of providing adapted wheelchairs for disabled athletes.

We gathered by The Pillar of Salt on Angel Hill in Bury St Edmunds. The evening was cool but we would soon warm up as, after a brief photo opportunity, we set off on a 3 mile long mystery tour through the environs of Bury St Edmunds.

Actually, we were all going to the pub but we had to get there by any means that didn't use wheels which was a 'Wheelie Good Idea', an Rotary GB&I project to raise money for Wheel Power, a charity that helps to provide adapted wheelchairs for disabled athletes. However; the walkers only knew the start point; they did not know the route or the final venue where we were to have a meal; plus a few, well earned, beers; so Colin was really popular that night as he was the only one that new the way. We followed him for an hour through the streets of Bury St Edmunds; across fields and water meadows and back into town only to end up at a pub about five minutes from where we started.

As you can imagine, the beer was very welcome and the food helped us to forget the aching limbs; well, until we had to walk back to the car that is. But never mind; we raised a few hundred pounds for a very good cause.
