This year the programme ran from 4pm on Saturday 30th August until the morning of Saturday 6th September 2014.  A full week of residential activities designed to build mental, social and intellectual confidence and self-awareness in young people (18 - 26 years old).

The Rotary Youth Leadership Award programme is a mixture of carefully designed learning experiences, a business simulation, challenging exercises using the outdoors and feedback sessions delivered by professional trainers who have experience of working with young people in a challenging environment through education.

The students can be sponsored by either individual Rotary clubs or a group of clubs. Also, local organisations and companies can support RYLA by sponsoring a member of their staff whom they wish to develop. The sponsors simply pay for the fee and any expenses incurred. It is important that the local rotary club has a key involvement in the selection of participants to uphold the standard of the programme.

The Open Afternoon was on Sunday 31st August 4.30pm - there was an open invitation to come and see what it all involves and chat to the candidates, including our own Iain - refreshments will be on offer.

The group is split into 5 groups of 8 or 9 and given a colour name eg Purple.

Several club members popped over to Grafham Water to see how the RYLA Group for 2014 was getting on. The weather was lovely, sunny with a fresh breeze - perfect for water sports - and for watching the action from the shore or the decking. Alan and Sian met several reps from clubs across the District including Nick, Robin, Bill, Pat and Martin.  We had a brief and very upbeat chat with Iain as he transferred from Sailing to Canoeing, having started with Kayaking after Breakfast. He was suffering a little from the Night March they had all been sent on with torches and maps but seemed ready for anything.

The climbing wall looks massive!

Duncan, Paul and Alan have been involved in judging various activities during the week - which is brilliant!

The week ended with a deliscious formal dinner on the Friday Night with Alan and Sian as guests and top table guests including Nick Corle DG. The candidates were very welcoming and chatty hosts.  After the meal each team performed a humerous summary of their week together and followed this by enjoying a very late night disco - where do they find the energy!
