The Young Chef Competition  in our District  is continuing to grow in popularity and plans are well advanced for the forthcoming event. This year we welcome the RC Tottington / Bury West into the competition.


However there is still time for your own Club to secure your place in the heats but you need to contact our YC District Co-ordinator Roger Shepherd ASAP.  Don't leave it too late and miss the chance!!

We have a lot to live up to this year. Last year the RC Ramsbottom had a Young Chef progress to the National Final winning the Best Dish of the Day Award.  This was the first District 1285 success in the National Final so fingers crossed for 2017/18.






We are now staring to plan ahead for the ever popular Young Chef Competition.  In this respect we have now received all the relevant details for the forthcomg  competition. Here it is posted below:-

This years Young Chef Final, was held at Lincoln College on Saturday 20th May 2017. There were eight finalists from within Rotary GBI. They had all progressed through their initial School event, District Qualifiers, the District and then the Regional Final .The initial entry last Summer, was approximately five thousand Young Chefs, being duly reduced along the way to just eight !!!  Rebecca was one of those eight  and this in itself was a magnificent achievemnt. However there was more was to come on the day !!!

 Our District Champion,  Rebecca Wilkinson from Woodhey High School, sponsored by RC Ramsbottom, was supported by her parents, Club President,and   District Young Chef Administrator  Rtn Keith Crane, Co-ordinator Roger Shepherd , and our extremely busy District Governor Stan and  his wife Sheila. Bowes. This support was important for Rebecca and thanks to all those who made the journey to Lincoln.

Once the two hour event concluded, the gathered supporters awaited the results with baited breath and a deathly silence.  Mr Walter Zanre the sponsor Filippo Berios MD, began by acknowledging the extremely high standard of cooking these very young competitors had attained.

Then before the overall winner was announced, the Judges awarded  the "Outstanding  Dish of the Day" Rebecca Wilkinson of  District 1285.

They considered her main dish of ...Smoked Haddock and Lancashire Cheese souffle with poached egg, cream of mustard sauce ,watercress and pomegranate seeds as being    technically  superb.

Unfortunately Rebecca did not make the position of overall winner and this year it went to the Scottish Champion. Tabitha Steven,  ( RC Glasgow.). Tabitha was also the youngest finalist at 13years old, and she  may well be the first Scottish winner.

However the achievement of being our FIRST District 1285 National Young Chef finalist,  plus receiving the "Outstanding Dish" accolade, must enhance Rebecca  Wilkinsons CV  enormously and she can be justly proud of her day at Lincoln. Congratulations to Rebecca, and all those involved!....this was ...."our finest hour " 










The Regional Final of the Young Chef Competition was held at Hopwood Hall College, Rochdale on the 18th March.  The winner was Rebecca Wilkinson from Woodhey HS.


Rebecca,  supported by her sponsoring club, RC Ramsbottom, will now be representing District 1285 at the National Final at Lincoln College on Saturday 20th May 2017. Her parents and supporting Rotarians, will be there for the Young Chef  at the prestigious final.

All Rotarians involved, plus our excellent supporters at The Marriott Airport Hotel, who judge all our finals and provide a mentoring event for our District finalists wish Rebecca the very best of luck.


We now begin to plan ahead for the Rotary Young Chef Competition 2017 - 2018.

The annual competition now begins all over again. So we now invite all our regular participating clubs, to kindly support Young Chef once again. And we invite any new clubs interested in holding a Young Chef Competition (at their local Senior School), to contact myself, or any involved Rotarian for entry information as soon as possible.


  Following this years success (see above) ,RC Ramsbottom have already planned four .heats in July, for 60 interested contestants. ( Schools are often able to hold such in-school heats immediately following exams at  the end of term)


 Clubs are requested to supply a chef (or two) to  judge, and supply all contestants with a prize. Members are often willing to help organize or attend the event.


So may I ask clubs to contact their local Senior School Food Tech Teacher pronto, to select their top-two contestants from an in-school Young Chef Competition.They are then entered into the Rotary Young Chef Qualifying rounds in November and December, with a District Final in February, Regional final in March, and hopefully once again the National Final in April/May 2018.


President Elects, or Club Chair persons, who may be interested in Young Chef can expect my full support in introducing your clubs into this excellent Competition,which has the potential to create a career path for young aspiring chefs.
