Torbay Prostate Support Association (TPSA) & Rotary Club of Preston (Torbay) Saving Lives in Torbay
Matt Rudd (of the Times & Sunday Times) visited Torbay on 1st May 2025 to cover the benefits of community Prostate Health Awareness and PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) testing initiatives.
Matt along with former MP Kevin Foster both attended the event and received a PSA test.
TPSA have been providing invaluable support to Men their family and friends, who’s lives are affected by Prostate Cancer for the past 26 years and have seen continued increases in people using their services.
By the end of 2025 TPSA will have funded the testing of around 3,000 men typically 8% of whom will be advised to seek further investigations . Potentially saving a significant number of lives and increasing the range of treatment options available to them.
Each test costs TPSA in the region of £30 and we rely totally on donations from local organisations and the public to be able to continue our work.
We have over the past 3 years enjoyed an amazing partnership with the Rotary Club of Preston (Torbay) who in addition to providing financial support also provide the marshaling on the evening to ensure the event runs like clockwork.
On the evening over 360 men were test and inline with PCRMP (Prostate Cancer Risk Management Programme) 30 men received Red letters advising them to seek further investigations via their GP and 36 received amber letters indicating they should make their GP aware.
Can you afford to take the risk ?
Of looking back and saying “I wish I had taken a PSA test sooner”
· 1 in 8 white men & 1 in 4 Black men will get Prostate Cancer
· 1 in 5 men will be diagnosed with metastatic Prostate cancer.
· Prostate Cancer is the Largest cancer in the UK
Sobering statistics. These figures can however be reduced significantly by greater awareness and early testing. All it takes in the first instance is a simple blood test. Every man 50 and over in the UK is entitled to ask their GP for a test.
Sadley many men do not do it until its too late.
More and more Men are being diagnosed at younger ages including many celebrities
With the results just in from the latest event held at the Livermead House hotel this figure has risen to 9%, with 3 men in their 40’s , 14 in their 50’s and 8 in their 60’s being advised to take further action. You can check your risk of Prostate Cancer on the TPSA website. www.tpsa.org.uk PCUK site
Please don’t take the risk of being the 1 in 5 men presenting with metastatic Prostate cancer, check your risk, if its high risks or if your 50 or over request a test via your GP today.
