Preston Rotary Club supports local Paignton based Doorstep Arts CIC
Doorstep Arts CIC, a local, non- profit, performing arts education group, made a tremendous impression on the members of Preston Rotary Club when two directors of the community group visited the club recently to explain what they did.
As a result the members of Preston Rotary Club felt Doorstep Arts fitted in well with the Club’s aims to help support and encourage charities and organisations which enable and inspire the local community.
Steve Latham, President of Preston Rotary Club said “We were incredibly impressed by the enthusiasm and dedication of the Directors who came to visit us. We immediately felt that we wanted to explore ways in which we could help them further develop their involvement, through performing arts, with the young people of our community. Their track record over the eleven years since they started is impressive, building a sense of inclusiveness across all young people from all backgrounds”
As a result Preston Rotary Club is providing sponsorship to Doorstep Arts to fund the role of an Assistant Artist for the next 12 months. This role will be filled by a young person (16-25) who will be taking their first steps in the industry – looking to progress to a career in the arts – performing, teaching or both. As part of the Doorstep Arts ‘Foot in the Door’ progression scheme, this young person will gain firsthand experience of organising and running groups in performing arts and also receive mentoring and support from the senior members of the team.
Erin Walcon, Co-Director of Doorstep Arts, said ‘We are delighted to be building a relationship with our local Rotary organisations. The arts-based work we do in Torbay is about supporting local young people to gain confidence in leadership, collaboration, their own voice, and their power to change things for the better both in their community and the larger world. This feels like a natural link to the Rotary aims and we’ve been so impressed by the charitable work that our local Rotary clubs do.’
